From the Phoenix area, take HWY 87 North towards Payson. Once in Payson, take HWY 260 east toward the town of Star Valley, AZ. 4.3 miles from the turn (and just outside of the town of Star Valley) turn left on signed Mayfield Canyon Road. Quickly stay left here to stay on the correct road (the other road to the right is private). After 0.2 miles, the road turns to well graded dirt. After 0.3 miles, turn left at the signed junction for Houston Loop trail. You can park here or if you have a high clearance vehicle, you can go another 0.2 miles or so (cross the dry creek) to the trail start. Look for the small brown signs that mark the Houston trail. ]]></c:value>

To the Walnut Trail #251 Trailhead: From the Phoenix area, take HWY-87 through Payson to Pine. In Pine, turn left on FR 428, which is signed as 'Hardscrabble Road'. Drive 1.7 miles to the trailhead sign. There is limited parking here (two cars). The last 0.7 miles is well graded dirt road.

To the Oak Trail #16 Trailhead: Instead of going into the town of Pine, look for the Pine Traihead sign just south of town. Pull off to the left and look for a road that goes west. This road is not signed so it could be tricky to find. After about 0.2 miles of driving, there is a barbed wire fence across a wash with a gate across it. Park here and go through the gate (or through a hole in the barbed wire fence) Look for a large green gate in the barbed wire that signals the start of the Oak trail. Alternatively, the Oak trailhead can be accessed from Old Country Road, but this dirt road is in bad shape near the trailhead. You can drive as far as you can go and hike the short distance to the green gate.

To get to the trailhead: from the Phoenix area, take HWY-87 North toward Payson. Stay on HWY -87 as you head towards the town of Pine.

LOWER TRAILHEAD: Just after mile marker 267, turn right and follow the sign for the Pine Canyon Trail.

UPPER TRAILHEAD: Continue past the town of Pine and the town of Strawberry on HWY-87. At mile marker 279.7, turn right onto FR6038. This turnoff is not well signed so you need to be on alert after passing mile marker 279. Once turning onto FR6038, it is less than 0.1 miles to the trailhead. Passenger cars are OK here. There is a trail head sign on the left that reads Pine Creek Trail. ]]></c:value>

From the Phoenix area, take HWY 87 North towards Payson. Once in Payson, continue on HWY 87 towards the towns of Pine and Strawberry. Just as you're headed out of town, turn right onto the signed road for the Houston Mesa road. Take this paved road 10.1 miles through the small community of Whispering pines. The road turns to well graded dirt here. Turn right at the signed junction to the Washington Park trailhead. Continue 2.8 miles on FR32 and turn right at the sign for the Washington Park trailhead. To get to the trailhead: from the Phoenix area, take HWY-87 North toward Payson. Once in Payson, take HWY-260 East towards Heber. Turn left at the signed junction for the Rim Road (FR300, signed as the turnoff for Woods Canyon Lake). FR300 will eventually turn into a well graded dirt road. Take FR300 8.4 miles and turn left on signed FR169. Take FR169 7.6 miles and turn right onto signed FR119 (sign points towards Telephone Ridge trail). Take this road 1.5 miles to a fork, turning left at the signed fork (stay towards the Telephone Ridge trail) and then make a quick right. From this point, the road gets rocky, so you should have a high clearance vehicle. The trailhead parking is at the signed end of FR119, after about another 2 miles from the fork.

To get to the trailhead: from the Phoenix area, take HWY-87 North toward Payson. Go through the towns of Payson, Pine, and Strawberry while staying on HWY-87. About fifteen miles after Strawberry, take Lake Mary Road (also known as FH-3) North past Clint's Well and towards Happy Jack. Ten miles after passing Clint's Well, take FR81 West (signed for West Clear creek). On FR81, drive 3.1 miles to a fork. Turn left at this fork marked for the Tramway trail onto FR81E. Go 1.1 miles and stay right at the fork marked 'trail' (FR81E). Go 1.1 more miles and stay left at the fork (FR81E). After 0.5 miles, stay left at the fork (FR81E). After another 0.7 miles, there is a fork with the left signed for "Maxwell Trail". This is the junction between FR81E and FR693. Park here to start the loop.

High clearance vehicles are recommended for this road, as it is quite rutted. ]]></c:value>

About fifteen miles after Strawberry, take Lake Mary Road (also known as FH-3) North past Clint's Well and towards Happy Jack. Ten miles after passing Clint's Well, take FR81 West. On FR81, drive 3.1 miles to a fork. Turn left at this fork to get on FR81E. Take FR81E for 3.8 miles to a fork with FR693. Stay left at this fork and in another 0.5 miles, you will be at the junction of Maxwell Trail Road and Maxwell Tank Road. Park here to start the loop.

Depending on the weather conditions, High clearance vehicles are recommended. I managed to get my 2 wheel drive truck stuck in the mud here after some Spring rains. Later in the summer, the roads were dry and flat enough for passenger cars. ]]></c:value>

To get to the trailhead: from the Phoenix area, take HWY-87 North toward Payson. Once in Payson, take HWY-260 East towards Heber. After about 30 miles, turn left onto signed FR300 (also known as the Rim Road). After 3.3 miles on this paved road, turn right onto the signed road for Woods Canyon Lake. There are several access areas to the lake and they all access the trail. We chose the Spillway day use parking area ($7 for day use as of July 2021). Turn right at the sign for the Spillway campground and take this paved road 1.1 miles from the rim road to the day use area.
